K2 - Apache Recon

K2 - Apache Recon

Tip: 119   Waist: 78   Tail: 105

Pros: Perfect for the weekend warrior; from zero to hero.

Cons: Width leaves you yearning for more in the powder.

Comments: Lets the mullet blow in the wind.

Ski Test Finalist

Additional Review Provided by Skiing Magazine: Damp and stable with a giant sweet spot, the Recon is the most user-friendly ski in the category. Point it and it adapts to any terrain, moving from short to long turns with nary a hiccup.

Props:

Accommodates a wide range of skier types. Lets you turn off your brain—which is fun, as long as you’re not BASE jumping.

Gripes:

Lacks energy. And the 78-millimeter waist is skinny for a big powder day.

Testers' Take:

"This is the best East Coast ski ever." —Greg "Aldo" Peruzzi

Gold Medal Ski

Additional Review Provided by SKI Magazine:

K2 was the first to marry deep sidecut to a midfat waist. That legacy endures in the amazing Recon, which retains an ideal blend of soft-snow/hard-snow performance. There’s enough width to float in powder, but two sheets of metal and a wood core give it integrity. "Turn-entries are like silk, and the platform is nice and friendly," said Morgan. "Comfort and consistency are its hallmarks."

Best For:

Easterner looking for width; Westerner who already has a powder ski.

Not For:

Blasting through crud or maching down ice or frozen corduroy.

Great all-around frontside ski if that's all you do. Neither too stiff nor too soft and not too much edge bite.
