SKIING AND BOARDING WITH KIDS ON A BUDGET

KUSA - If you have kids that love to ski or ride, but you're on a tight budget, then the Junior Trade In program at Colorado Ski & Golf is for you.

For the latest Sidebar, Allen Nolting stopped by to talk about the trade in program, as well as their recycling project.

The Junior Trade In program was created 27 years ago to insure that children's equipment was modestly priced to help Colorado families get their kids onto the slopes at a very low price. A complete set of used equipment is available for $99.99 and includes skis, boots, bindings, and a safety binding check. Equipment can be returned the following year by Sept. 30 and for just $20 per item (boots, skis), parents can refit their kids into a different set of used equipment for the next season. The net cost per child after the first year is $49.99 per year!

The Junior Trade-In is also offered on new equipment with setups starting at $199.99. If the equipment is returned by Sept. 30 the following year, a 50 percent discount is given for the next year's equipment--$99.99/year after the first year! If the kids don't grow that much or love their current equipment, they can keep it for two years and return it for a 30 percent discount after two seasons. A similar deal is available for snowboarders with a slightly higher rate for used equipment--$99.99 for a full snowboard setup that includes boots and deck.

For the third consecutive year, the Colorado Ski & Golf and Boulder Ski Deals stores are offering ski and snowboard recycling--onsite. Beginning Sept. 4 at the five SKI REX locations, skiers and riders can bring their unwanted skis, snowboards, cross-country skis, boots, poles and bindings to any of these stores. Equipment in good condition will be donated to charitable domestic programs. Equipment that is no longer safe or usable by these programs is transported to a facility south of Denver and shredded for use in a variety of new products including composite decking, flooring, furniture, etc. A nominal fee will automatically be added to the purchase of new adult skis, snowboards, and boots and all proceeds will be donated to Snowsports Industries America (SIA) to support their national Ski Recycling Program.

SKI REX hours are Saturday, Sept. 4 from 9am to 6pm and Sunday, Sept. 5 from 10am to 5pm. The final "tent" day is Monday, Sept. 6 from 10am until 5pm but the same discounts are available until Sunday, Sept. 19 at the following Colorado Ski & Golf locations:

7715 Wadsworth, Arvada
